Before they were invented in the 1940s, receiving equipment such as radios had to use glass valves. Transistors were a technology that was as revolutionary as any. The American brand Regency launched their radio in 1954 but Sony were to do it better. In 1954, borrowing know-how from American Bell Laboratories and the Western Electric Company, Sony produced the first Japanese transistor radio, the TR-55, launched in 1955. Even from its inception, Sony was one of the most innovative companies when it came to combining technology with aesthetics. The Sony Corporation was established in May 1945. ![]() One of the ways that Japan reinvented itself after the 2nd World War was in the area of applying new technology to domestic products, although in the 1950s many of these products had a greater sophistication with their electronics than their appearance. ![]() The way the grill fits into the case was partly inspired by an etched decorative plate in the dashboards of Lincoln automobiles of the day.
